How do we create art?
My own creative processes lead repeatedly to existential questions. Among them are the following items I am focusing for research: chaos and order, form and emptiness, matter and energy.
A prequel to verbal answers lies partly within the Western philosophy of science but more clearly in Eastern thought, creation as a fundamental part of Chinese philosophy.
As she digs, revealing that which remains invisible to the average eye, Marieke Pauwels recycles and defunctionalises her shapes and goes.In her work Pauwels reinterprets folk cultures and traditions in a contemporary light, questioning the integrity of creation. The transposition which emerges preserves the vulnerability of what has been lost – the fragility of objects, of techniques but above all of ideas. In her designs she suggests a dimension that is unreachable, untouchable and nostalgic and endows it with a sensual counterbalance. Investigation of the image runs parallel with the relationship between that which is depicted and its essence.
Landscape is of course a charged metaphor. To Pauwels it forms a background for her search – the quest for the essential and ultimately for what it means to be human. As a vehicle of opposition, the mountain, an imposing rising landscape, recalls the antithesis between East and West, between the worlds, to which she feels so closely bound. In her oeuvre, the mountain is an expression of the contradiction between the spiritual and the physical, between the transcendental and the earth(l)y, between the eternal and the variable and as elsewhere, between the religious and the erotic.
My residency in JDZ Taoxichuan international studio gave me an environment of Chinese Culture to create within, where people take care of you and thus participate and become part of your work. In this respect, I consider creating as a ritual, a kind of sacrifice to the human connection, to ancient history, craftmanship, nature, our ancestors .....
