Melt is an exhibition concerned for an increasingly threatened global environment due to climate change. Our planet is changing as glaciers in the Antarctic and Arctic disappear at a breathtaking rate due to rising temperatures in the atmosphere and sea water. Global warming is accelerated by the burning of fossil fuels and the compounded effect of an ecosystem that is out of balance. The melting of ice mountains increases sea levels across the planet resulting in devastating changes to water flow and supply.
Chinese philosophy, religion and cultural history embraces the significance of mountains. China’s sacred mountains are pathways to greater consciousness and the heavens. Melt is an exhibition that suggests the distinctive value and importance of ice mountains. They are also sacred because glaciers hold a memory of climate history preserved as layers of ice dating back millions of years. By analysing the ice, scientists are able reconstruct the earth’s past climate and atmospheric composition. Glaciers and icescapes are pathways to an understanding of climate change and scientific evidence of devastating geological changes.
Melt expresses the beauty of Antarctica and the Arctic circle by capturing the hues, tones, shades of glaciers, ice beds and atmospheric effects by utilising Jingdezhen Celadon glazes and porcelain. Melt is also a response to our climate emergency, and the fragility of our current global environment.
