Priya Sundaravalli holds a PhD in engineering at the University of Michigan. During a ceramic class of the art department she first got into contact with clay. She arrived 16 years ago in Auroville, spending the first 10 years as a teacher for science in Auroville schools Priya always continues to do pottery at the side. After several successful exhibitions of her work the hobby turned into a full time profession. Priya states that in her expression she seeks the unity of opposites – asymmetry and balance, chaos and harmony, imperfection and attentions to the detail. Her creative process relies on spontaneity, moment-to-moment guidance and serendipity. Her main inspiration is the nature around her, all her art work is organic shaped. For a large scale installation for the Mumbai airport the main influence were the shapes of live in the ocean.
